Cooking Up Fun

With Thanksgiving come and gone, our attention now turns to the Christmas Holidays. A great treat and equally fun activity for the kids is baking a gingerbread house! Numerous recipes can be found online, but here are a few tips for constructing your culinary masterpiece!
- Don’t limit yourself to a plain square house! Let your creative juices flow and you can make almost any shape, from a gingerbread igloo to a Victorian house with porch, or even a gingerbread castle complete with paper and toothpick flags!
- You can use dough scraps and assorted candies to create fun additions and landscaping to your house such as trees, bushes, fences and more!
- To apply candy decorations such as Smarties, dab a small amount of icing to the underside of the candy and hold in place until set.
Bundle up your Home for Winter!
Top 10 Winter Checklist
The weather has started to cool and the leaves have begun to fall, so it’s time to get your home bundled up for the coming winter. Here are a couple of reminders to get your home ready for a warm and cozy winter:
- Check chimneys for obstructions like nests.
- Test your furnace by setting the thermostat to “heat” and raising the thermostat setting until the furnace turns on. Once you have confirmed it is working properly you can return the thermostat to a comfortable setting. Remember to open you windows for the first 15 minutes after the furnace starts generating heat!
- Check and clean or replace furnace air filters every month you are heating your home.
- Ensure all doors to the outside shut tightly, and check other doors for ease of use. Replace door weatherstripping if required.
- Ensure windows and skylights close tightly; repair or replace weatherstripping, as needed.
- Check smoke, carbon monoxide and security alarms, and replace batteries.
- Clean leaves from eavestroughs and roof, and test downspouts to ensure proper drainage from the roof.
- Drain and store outdoor hoses. Close interior valve to outdoor hose connection and drain the hose bib (exterior faucet), unless your house has frost-proof hose bibs.
- Winterize landscaping, for example, store outdoor furniture, prepare gardens and, if necessary, protect young trees or bushes for winter
- Check all window and door exterior caulking and redo areas where cracks are appearing.
